Bayhead Street Stornoway

Stornoway

Stornoway, the main seaport of the Outer Hebrides, is a vital link to the mainland and a gateway to the unique culture of Lewis.

Founded by Vikings in the 9th century as Stjórnavágr, this charming harbour town developed around a natural harbour, becoming a bustling hub for islanders.

In 1844, the MacKenzie family sold Stornoway and the Isle of Lewis to Sir James Matheson, who built the impressive Lews Castle overlooking the bay. After a brief ownership by William Lever, 1st Viscount Leverhulme, who faced financial difficulties, the parish was gifted to the community, leading to the establishment of the Stornoway Trust.

Today, Stornoway offers scenic coastal walks, local history at the museum, lots of shops, bars, restaurants, and entertainment, all while showcasing a vibrant community spirit and rich heritage.

Stornoway is the gateway to exploring the rest of Lewis and Harris. From Stornoway to the furthest point of Harris you can still be home in time for an evenings entertainment in the town.Â
